This is a photograph of Nizwa fort. Much of Oman's history is echoed in mud brick, stucco and stone of its defensive architecture. Over one thousand forts, castles and watchtowers continue to stand guard over the landscape, each fort bearing witness to a proud past and each with its own story to tell. Beyond offering protection, these monumental structures have played a vital role in defining Oman's history serving as points of convergence for political, social and religious interaction and as centres for learning. Often integrated with lively souqs, mosques and fascinating artisanal and residential qarters, they provide the modern day visitor with a unique opportunity to experience history. The large earth filled circular tower of NIZWA is unique in Oman. Constructed by Imam Sultan bis Saif bin Malik Al Ya'arubi around 1660CE, it is connected to a labryrinthine castle. Adjacent to the fort and castle complex is Nizwa's traditional souq, famed for its thriving craft industries. SEE NIZWA FORT TOUR |
