Tourist attractions in Male include the Islamic Center, the most famous landmark in Male whose golden dome dominates the skyline. The Hukuru Miskiiy or Friday Mosque was built in 1656. This is a historic mosque built with coral stones. Close to the Friday Mosque is the gleaming white minaret also built in 1675. The chief muezzin of Male called the faithful to prayer from this minaret before the Islamic Center was built. Opposite the Hukuru Miskiiy is the Medhu Ziyaarath the shrine of Abu al Barakaath who converted the Maldives to Islam in AD 1153. Mulee-AAge built in 1936 before the World War is now the Presidential Palace The Maldives changed from a Republic to a sultanate and back to a republic in only 16 years between 1953 and 1968 The remains of the sultan's palace now houses the National Museum and the grounds are the Sultan Park. The tomb of Mohammed Thakurufaanu is rected in the compund of the Bihuroazu Kamanaa Miskiiy in memory of the Sultan who liberated the country from Portuguese rule in 1588. Beautifully laid out with carpet green grass the Jumhooree Maidan is the public square constructed along the northern waterfront. On the eastern edge of the square stands the official flag post on which is hoisted a permanent flag of the Maldives, the largest in the country
