The natural disasters of Sunday 26 December have affected Sri Lanka and the
Maldives. We are, however, able to offer flights to the
Maldives and stopover tours of Sri Lanka which do not include the devastated South coast of Sri
Lanka. Colombo Airport is open and the interior of Sri Lanka where the
Cultural Triangle is located is not physically affected by the tidal waves
which struck the coasts of Sri Lanka.
As Sri Lanka's economy depends heavily on
tourism, (many hotels on the south coast which were not
structurally damaged have already or will re-commence operations by end
January), foreign tourists will assist in the recovery by continuing with
earlier
plans to visit Sri Lanka and to see the Cultural Triangle in the interior.
Tidal Wave Strikes Southern and
Eastern Coastlines of Sri Lanka
A tidal wave,
Tsumani, struck the southern and eastern coastal areas of Sri Lanka
on the morning of 26 Dec 04.
Sri Lanka Tourist Board and
industry representatives are taking all necessary steps to provide alternate
accommodation for visitors affected by flooding in the aftermath of the
tidal wave affecting the South Asia Region.
Information regarding tourists in the island's coastal belt is being
provided round the clock. Many
hotels on the South Coast have been
damaged by flooding and guests are being evacuated to
Colombo for safety reasons. The Sri Lanka
Tourist Board is keeping all foreign missions based in Colombo informed to
facilitate speedy responses to inquiries on the whereabouts of foreign
guests.Sri Lanka also has an influx of tourists
from neighboring countries affected by the tidal wave. Colombo is expected
to have a problem with accommodation this week and a request is
being made to all arriving passengers without personal accommodation to
refrain from visiting the island.Sri Lanka
Tourist Board will provide regular updates on developments.
